Despite the naysayers who find deficiencies in the story, clearly Avatar, it seems, is resonating emotionally with audiences who find the immersive “journey to Pandora” an experience worthy of experiencing multiple times. In fact CNN reports on “Avatar Blues”, noting: “James Cameron’s completely immersive spectacle “Avatar” may have been a little too real for […]
Maybe you remember these, maybe your folks told you about it — either way it’s quite an experience to view live breaking news coverage of the “where were you when?” moments of the last half century. This is my list — what have I missed?
I was living and working in the Philipppines when Princess Diana died. I was in my apartment at the Hotel Danarra, watching on BBC, when the news broke:
Ironically, I was in a recording studio in Washington DC working on what would be my only album as a singer/songwriter when John Lennon was assassinated. We were in the middle of working on some overdubbing when one of the technicians came in from a break with the news. We immediately quit our session and turned on the television.
I was in training at “the farm” en route to becoming a CIA officer when the U.S. Embassy in Iran was taken over by angry students, leading to 444 days of captivity for American personnel including a handful of CIA officers, one of whom I knew. It was a sobering moment, given the path I was traveling down.
I had been a sci-fi fan for quite a few years and so I was relatively unimpressed by the Apollo 11 moon landing, so much so that as it happened, I was on a double date at a drive-in. But I did manage to exit the car at the right time and go to the concession stand, where I watched the historic moment with the workers there on a tiny black and white TV.
The shooting of 13 student protesters, 4 of whom later died, at Kent State by the Ohio National Guard on May 4, 1970 was a moment that seemed impossible to believe at the time–that this could happen in America. What were we coming to? This was the event that pushed me from being ambivalent about the Vietnam War to being thoroughly and irrevocably against it, and against the type of arrogance of power that could lead to an incident like this.
For a baby boomer American, the thought that the President of the United States could become so politically damaged that he would have to resign was unthinkable, and so even though by 1974 I was thoroughly against the war and detested Richard Nixon — it still seemed surreal to watch a sitting U.S. President resign in ignominy. There was a sense that the institution, and the fabric of our society, had been damaged irreparably.
The final chaotic days of the Fall of Saigon captivated the world and I was no exception. We had all turned against the war long ago, but still it was sobering and surreal to watch America and our friends caught in a maelstrom of disarray and a thousand stories of personal tragedy.
The Beatles’ arrival in America in 1964 was huge. Before they appeared on Ed Sullivan they were perceived as being somehow dangerous, with hair that was frightening long (but looks short and tidy today)…..and then there was the Ed Sullivan appearance, which I watched with completely rapt attention, sitting next to my sister and mildly disapproving parents.
The 1972 attack on the Israeli Olympic team in 1972 was vivid and painful — and the fact that it was the the sports team headed by Jim McKay covering the tragedy created a juxtaposition that made it seem all the more surreal. Jim McKay was not the actual anchor for the games–Chris Schenkel was — but in a shrew decision it was McKay who took over the anchor chair and held our collective hands through the entire episode.
The Democratic National Convention in 1968, coming on the heels of the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, exploded into the ugliest event of its kind ever witnessed. Anti-war protesters had turned on the Johnson administration and its expansion of the war effort.
The assassination of Bobby Kennedy took place just after I finished my junior year of high school. My father, a colonel in the US Army, was in training for his third tour in Vietnam, where he would become a Province Senior Advisor — which meant he had to learn to speak Vietnamese, hence the training. […]
APRIL 4, 1968 — MARTIN LUTHER KING IS ASSASSINATED
Oe the day of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, I was a junior in high school at this point, living in Carlisle, Pennsyvania, the son of an Army colonel.
I did not see the Challenger disaster live – we were living in Moscow and I found out about it when I got on board an Embassy shuttle to go in to work. Everyone was talking about it. Much of the day was spent listening to radios, and eventually the images were embedded into my consciousness.
A collection of video clips of the JFK Assassination and its aftermath. For baby boomers of my era (not the earlies boomers — the second wave, born in the 50’s) , the assassination of JFK was the first nationally traumatic moment that we all shared.
The 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington began between 5:30am and 6:00am West Coast time. I arrived at Bally’s in Studio City at 5:40 and it had just begun.
It’s been three days since Orlando Sea World Trainer Dawn Brancheau died in an incident (was it an accident or attack?) involving Tilikum, a 30 year old bull Orca who weighs 12,000 pounds and was blamed for two previous deaths. What more do we know about what happened, and why?
Details are just beginning to surface about the tragic events at Orlando Sea World in which Tilikum, a 30 year old, 12,000 pound bull Orca, killed Dawn Brancheau, 40, a trainer at the facility. Althought Sea World officials initially made bland statements to the effect that it was an “accidental drowning involving an orca”, detailed eyewitness descriptions suggest a more violent event, and the history of the particular whale involved more than one previous death.
Google and eBay are among the companies that are trying out a new energy device called “Bloom Box” that will be unveiled Wednesday and could, if it delivers what its proponents promise, revolutionize the power industry by creating a standalone device that could power individual homes and businesses, replacing the traditional power grid.
AMC is threatening to join a boycott started by theaters in the Netherlands and Great Britain over Disney’s plans to shorten the window between its theatrical and DVD release of the 3D pic Alice In Wonderland from 17 weeks to 12 weeks. The theater owners fear this move will cut into their theatrical earnings. Interestingly, […]
I watched Tiger Woods 15 minute apology today and I’m basically of two minds about it. First, I think it was a truly heartfelt speech and no reasonable observer could call it “fake and phony”. I think it was clear that he wrote it himself or largely by himself, and I think it was remarkably comprehensive.
he last two weekends saw the Avatar vs Titanic box office derby reach a point where Titanic finally began to beat Avatar on a “same day of run” basis, and so now that this “crossover” point has been achieved, it’s as good a time as any to take a look at where the two are now, and where Avatar is likely to end up. As of President’s Day Monday, Avatar had reached a total Domestic Gross of $666,388,502, while through the same number of days in release Titanic had reached 376,270,721. This means that Titanic still had $225M of business to go.
I must be the last person in the universe to have discovered “Charlie Bit My Finger – Again!”, the all time most viewed YouTube clip, but in case there is anyone else out there who hasn’t seen it, I’m going to do my viral part and post it here. Truly hilarious. (10 March Update: This […]
CNN just showed a poll in which 48% of Americans are angry with Congress in general over the gridlock, with only 11% blaming Republicans only and 9% blaming Republicans only. Will this message ever actually get through to those in Congress?
The Berlin Wall was erected by the Soviets in 1961 and had been a fixture of the Cold War, and my life. It was a fact of life throughout my career in the CIA and I was sitting in a hotel room in Washington DC with a senior member of Philippine President Corazon Aquino’s entourage (she was on a state visit to the US) when we watched it come down together.
Various news outlets are reporting that Philippine authorities have identified approximately a dozen ‘karaoke rage’ killings in the Philippines over the last decade that were triggered by the singing of the Paul Anka penned Frank Sinatra hit “My Way”. As a result of this, they say, many establishments have taken “My Way” off the menu of songs available to sing in Philippine karaoke bars.
CNN is reporting that a woman 41 years old has a 51% higher chance of having a child with autism than a woman of 25. This is a very scary statistic unless you put some context to it — and CNN didn’t do a very good job of it. Nowhere in the segment did they say what the statistics are at 25 — but MedTV says that the figure is 1 in 166 to 1 in 500.
ccording to Top Rank President Bob Arum, the longrunning CBS news icon 60 minutes will begin taping a segment on Manny Paquiao this week, following the Filipino pound-4-pound king as he trains at Freddie Roach’s Wildcard Gym in Hollywood in preparation for his March 13 bout with tough Ghanian Joschua Clottey in Jerry Jones’ Cowbody Stadium in Dallas.
James Cameron has writen an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal which addresses the issue of NASA’s future and the recent budget decisions put forward by the Obama Administration regarding NASA in general and the moon program in particular. ,
