Box Office Mojo is reporting the weekend actuals.  Brandon Gray reports:  “‘Avatar’ beat its estimates again, coming in at $68.5 million domestically and $136.3 million internationally for the weekend. On the other hand, ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ and others were significantly overestimated…”

Here’s the chart of Avatar’s actuals compared to Titanic’s actuals — with Titanic’s “percentage of final gross” applied to Avatar.  It shows two things:

  1. If Avatar has the legs of Titanic, it’s US Gross will be off the charts — above 1B.
  2. While Avatar is close to keeping up with Titanic in terms of trend lines, it is losing ground slightly.  But it has a huge lead.
