The boxing blogs got a nice little jolt of adrenaline last night when Dan Rafael of ESPN quoted Mayweather advisor Leonard Ellerbe as saying:  “We’re looking to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella,” with the “little fella” being, of course, Manny Pacquiao.   All the blogs are talking about it — and on ESPN a poll as to whether this is just more Mayweather “blather” or is the real deal is running 59/41 in favor of “blather”.  Still, it’s an enticing prospect that has been dormant long enough that its resurgence has people talking.

Golden Boy top man Richard Shaefer ws also quoted as saying that Golden Boy and Mayweather have informed the Pay Per View people that Mayweather is booked to fight on May 5 at the MGM grand, and the preferred opponent is Pacquiao.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum isn’t buying it, though.

“Listen, we’re not going to consider anything until after the Marquez fight,” Arum said. “The way they are going about it seems like a bizarre way to go about it. If you want to put it together, you meet, you talk. You don’t just come out and say, ‘The fight is May 5 at the MGM.’ What kind of negotiation is that? So I don’t take what they said seriously.

“I think it’s Floyd’s way of trying to grab a little bit of the spotlight away from Manny. I’m not going to get upset. I take it with a grain of salt.”

This is fun.
