With his predecessor under arrest and charged with poll sabotage, Philippine President Noynoy Aquino today vowed to strengthen government efforts to root out corruption in the Philippines.  Aquino made remarks at the 75th Anniversary celebration of the National Bureau of Investigation.   Aquino acknowedged he is coming under criticism for his efforts, but said:  ” My answer to them is this – with their aggressiveness in stealing people’s money, we will triple our aggressiveness in hunting them down to make them accountable now.

Aquino claimed that he has the support of the people :  “They are giving us the opportunity to serve the people. So it is only them to whom we owe a debt of gratitude, and nobody else…..We will remain united. Whether you are a government employee or an ordinary citizen, you have a big role to play for the good of your fellowmen and the country as well.”

COMMENT:  Increasingly it seems that P-noy is intent on quelling the corruption that has been an integral part of Philippine society throughout its modern history.  Previous attempts by his predecessors to make serious inroads have failed.  His commitment and the vigor with which he is pursuing this goal is admirable.  Here’s hoping…..
